Job Introduction
We have a great opportunity to join our Youth Justice and Support Service in a key role to help safeguard and support children who are involved in offending, as well as their parents, carers and others affected by their behaviour, and support staff to develop and deliver an effective, evidence based service.
As a Senior Youth Offending Team Officer, you’ll work directly with young people and their families to help achieve better outcomes and keep communities safer.
You'll provide professional supervision and practice development to main grade staff within a multi-agency team covering the city of Milton Keynes. You'll contribute to the development of effective services to prevent offending by children and young people in Milton Keynes and to take lead responsibility in designated key areas of service delivery.
Our service has a focus on areas that directly impact on young people’s lives and the wider community. We’re recognised for proactively working with young people to prevent exclusions from schools and for intervening at the earliest opportunity with young people involved in knife crime through our PRRE and ACT: Now projects. We work collaboratively with children’s social care, health and police partners amongst others.
You’ll be pivotal in supporting staff to build strong and trusting relationships with young people and their families whilst working to support families to address complex needs and risks. The work is challenging and demanding and includes working with young people who are assessed as high safety concerns to others and themselves.
You’ll ideally have a qualification in Youth Justice or relevant field (Health, Education, Criminal Justice, Social Care, Police), Specialist knowledge of criminal justice, legislation and policy and research, experience of working with adolescents with complex needs.
This is a site-based role.

Main Responsibility
- Assist the Operational Manager in the day to day operational management of a multi-agency team of professional staff and volunteers, including providing direct supervision and support.
- Coordination of a specific service area, including the day to day responsibility for staffing and allocation of resources.
- Representing the service at multi agency meetings and panels typically at a senior level.
- Ensuring Quality Standards are met through auditing and quality assurance processes.
- Supervise young people with complex needs and who are involved in offending, Serious Youth Violence and effected by exploitation, taking timely action to protect children and working with other services to ensure their needs are met and safeguarding concerns to themselves and other are reduced.
The Ideal Candidate
- Professional Qualification in Youth Justice or relevant field (probation, police, health, education, social work)
- Experience of working with adolescents with complex needs
Specialist knowledge of Youth Justice - Ability to develop and sustain partnerships with other professionals and agencies.
- Ability to encourage and support colleagues by sharing own expertise and experience of providing supervision and support to junior colleagues.
- Ability to make considered decisions, analyse and evaluate complex information in high risk situations
- For this role, the candidate is required to have a full UK driving licence, along with access to a vehicle. Evidence of the driving licence and vehicle insurance with business insurance will be required from the candidate should they be offered this position. Without this documentation the candidate will not be appointable.
- Should you be offered the role, as part of the pre-employment checks an Enhanced DBS will be actioned for you (unless you are on the DBS Update Service).

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
