Job Introduction
We’re seeking an enthusiastic and energetic person to join our Bikeability Cycle Training Team. The team provides cycle training to more than 2,000 people every year, teaching people how to cycle safely on our redways and roads.
As an instructor, you’ll understand the benefits of cycling and can teach and inspire others to ride. You’ll be responsible for delivering Bikeability Cycle Training to children, adults and families, mostly within schools during term time but also in school holidays, early evenings and occasional weekends.
This is a relief worker contract where work is offered depending on the number of requests we receive for cycling training. Whilst you don’t need to commit to working every week, you’ll need to be available to complete at least two individual courses per month during term time. That’s generally eight hours work per day over three or four days.
Main Responsibility
You will be responsible for delivering Bikeability cycle training to children, adults and families, mostly within schools during term time, but also in the school holidays, early evenings and occasional weekends.
You will also assist with campaigns and projects to raise the profile of cycling amongst schools, businesses and local communities.
On occasions, you will be required to attend events to promote active travel, cycling and the Bikeability cycle training programme.
You will need to be able to travel around the borough of Milton Keynes to reach the training courses, preferably by bike.
You will need to know your way around a bike so that you can check riders bikes for safety and carry out minor adjustments and repairs before training courses commence. (Cycle maintenance training can be provided.)
The Ideal Candidate
This role would suit someone who is passionate about cycling, who understands its many benefits, and who wants to teach and inspire others to ride.
A qualified and experienced Bikeability Instructor, the qualification is essential; work experience and the post course qualification can be provided for the right candidate.
You will need to be confident and experienced on a bike and enjoy working outdoors.
It is essential that you have a good level of English, great communication skills and a positive personable attitude, along with experience working with people.
You will possess the confidence to work independently and develop lesson plans, as well as being a good team player, who is able to follow plans that have been developed by other instructors.
You will demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice relating to cycling and road safety; and you will comply with all policies and statutory regulations relating to health and safety, safe working practices, hygiene, cleanliness.
You will have good planning and organisational skills to maintain accurate records and be able to prioritise and handle a range of tasks at any one time. No two days are the same when teaching so you will need to be adaptable, and have the ability to multi task, managing a group of people, delivering progressional cycle training, all in a controlled environment and with a positive can-do attitude.
You should have a good understanding of risk assessments and control measures.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
