Job Introduction
Our Highways and Transport Service deliver essential services for the people of Milton Keynes including highways maintenance, managing local bus services, and developing millions of pounds of transport infrastructure every year, plus much more.
We have some really significant projects to work on in the coming years, such as:
- Replacing street lighting to lower energy LEDs.
- A large-scale electric vehicle programme.
- Using AI and other technology to become even more efficient.
- Major road and cycling network projects.
We’re often the first on the scene to deal with emergencies, so you’ll need to be prepared to be out and about in all weathers and possibly on call during the winter.

Main Responsibility
- Manage and supervise the highway inspectors, ensuring the service is compliant and remains high performing at all times.
- Undertake and manage all safety inspections, insurance inspections and crossover functions.
- Ensure the cost effective and efficient co-ordination of required works.
- Represent the city council when necessary, assisting and dealing with all claims and legal challenges.
- Adhere at all times to policies procedures regarding Health and Safety.
The Ideal Candidate
- Significant practical experience of the supervision and management of highways contractors.
- Effective communication, consultation and engagement.
For this role, the candidate is required to have a full UK driving licence, along with access to a vehicle. Evidence of the driving licence and vehicle insurance with business insurance will be required from the candidate should they be offered this position. Without this documentation the candidate will not be appointable.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
