Our lawyers deal with planning, regeneration, property, highways and other related legal matters. The team is developing following the appointment of new leadership, and we’re seeking a Trainee Solicitor to join us.

You’ll be part of a wider corporate strategy to shape the continued improvement and development of Milton Keynes, through involvement in major council plans and projects designed to build on existing socio-economic strengths, tackle challenges and develop transformational policies.

With supervision, you’ll provide legal advice and services to the Council commensurate with the level of progress through the training contract as regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

You’ll carry out duties as directed by the Principal Lawyer and follow all reasonable instructions with the purpose of gaining supervised experience in legal practice. You will assist the Principal Lawyer and Lawyers within the Place legal team.

Milton Keynes has one of the fastest growing economies in the country and an ambitious growth agenda, so you’ll need to be commercially aware with an appetite for being busy and the ability to juggle competing priorities. You’ll ideally have a track record of enabling the delivery of council priorities.

This role is site based.

Interviews for this role will be w/c 29 September.

Main Responsibility

  • Under supervision, provide legal advice and services to the Council commensurate with the level of progress through the training contract as regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
  • Carry out the duties as directed by the Principal Lawyer and follow all reasonable instructions with the purpose of gaining supervised experience in legal practice 
  • Acquire sufficient practical experience, knowledge and skill as a solicitor so as to give reassurance that all relevant legal issues in respect of a matter have been, are and will be dealt with competently in the interests of the client department and council.
  • Comply with all requirements of the Solicitors Regulation Authority including maintaining a record of all work done and training received in order to satisfy the training contract conditions.
  • Under supervision contribute to chargeable hours in order to develop an understanding of the process of time recording.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Qualifying Law Degree or Post Graduate Diploma in Law Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (LPC).
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to complete Professional Skills Course.
  • Proven analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to recognise key/relevant issues and provide appropriate and timely advice.
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and work to deadlines and to take responsibility for delivering and meeting agreed work objectives, working to local frameworks and guidelines.
  • Proven ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in order to deal with potentially confrontational situations and able to balance customer needs and expectations.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
