Tenancy Sustainment Officer

Job Introduction

At Milton Keynes City Council, we make a real difference every day. Our Housing Operations team is seeking a Tenancy Sustainment Officer to help tenants maintain secure and sustainable housing.

This vital role focuses on preventing tenancy breakdown through proactive engagement, practical guidance and early intervention. 

Working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners, you’ll deliver tailored tenancy support and advice, ensuring compliance with housing legislation and promoting wellbeing.

This is a site-based role

Main Responsibility

  • This is a rewarding opportunity to help tenants sustain their homes and prevent tenancy breakdown. You will provide tailored support to tenants at risk due to rent arrears, anti-social behaviour, hoarding, or other vulnerabilities. 
  • Offer onboarding support to high-risk applicants during the move-in period.
  • You will work closely with Housing Officers, Anti-Social Behaviour colleagues, and external agencies to deliver holistic support plans. 
  • This role involves home visits and welfare checks.
  • Ensuring compliance with housing legislation and council policy.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience in housing, tenancy management, or support services, ideally within a local authority or social housing setting.
  • Strong knowledge of housing legislation and statutory guidance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build trust with vulnerable tenants.
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload and work independently under pressure.
  • Skilled in influencing and negotiating across multi-agency settings.
  • Proficiency in housing management systems and Microsoft Office.

If you are offered the role, we will carry out a Basic DBS check and BPSS referencing as part of the pre-employment process
 
To be successful in this role, you’ll need a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. If you’re offered the position, we’ll ask for proof of your licence and vehicle insurance, including business use cover. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to confirm your appointment without these documents.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week.  Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
