Team Manager - Children in Care

Job Introduction

We’re recruiting a Team Manager – Children in Care to join our dedicated Children’s Social Care service at Milton Keynes City Council.

Children in Care is responsible for ensuring Milton Keynes City Council fulfils its statutory legal responsibilities by meeting the needs of the children we care for. This role plays a vital part in making sure children experience safety, stability and positive outcomes through high quality social work practice.

As a Team Manager, you’ll lead and support a team of social workers to deliver consistent, child centred practice. You’ll focus on strong performance management, effective budget oversight and high quality supervision, ensuring statutory duties are met and children’s plans progress without delay.

This is a rewarding leadership role where your experience will directly influence practice quality and outcomes for children in our care.


This is a Site-Based role, and you’ll be expected to work from the designated workplace.

Main Responsibility

  • Managing, supervising and supporting a team of social workers and newly qualified colleagues.
  • Ensuring children in care receive timely, high quality assessments, plans and reviews that meet statutory requirements.
  • Driving strong performance through oversight of caseloads, quality assurance and reflective supervision.
  • Managing budgets effectively and ensuring resources are used responsibly.
  • Working closely with partner agencies to deliver coordinated support for children and young people.
  • Contributing to service development and continuous improvement across Children’s Social Care.
  • Supporting a positive team culture that values learning, accountability and collaboration.


The Ideal Candidate

  • A recognised social work qualification and registration with Social Work England.
  • Significant experience working with children in care within a statutory setting.
  • Proven experience of supervising and managing social workers.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance and best practice.
  • Confidence in performance management and quality assurance.
  • Experience of managing budgets and resources effectively.
  • The ability to lead with empathy, resilience and clear decision making.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. If we offer you the role, we’ll ask you to provide evidence of your driving licence and vehicle insurance, including cover for business use. We’re unable to confirm an appointment until these documents are received.

As part of the pre-employment checks, should you be offered the role, we’ll carry out an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, (unless you are currently registered with the DBS Update Service).

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week.  Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
