Specialist Property Lawyer

Job Introduction

We’re recruiting a Specialist Property Lawyer to join our Legal and Governance service. You’ll play a key role in supporting Milton Keynes City Council, leading complex property work that helps us deliver for our city. You’ll work closely with colleagues and councillors to provide trusted legal advice and help us achieve our long-term aims.

This role may be suitable for home working, following an assessment. Home‑based roles require a minimum of one day per week working from the office or site.

Main Responsibility

  • Lead on complex property legal work, including commercial, regeneration and residential property, disposals, acquisitions and other land transactions
  • Provide clear legal advice to colleagues and councillors on operational and strategic property matters
  • Build strong working relationships and understand the needs of the services you support
  • Supervise and mentor colleagues to ensure consistent and high-quality‑ legal support
  • Negotiate and complete property transactions on behalf of the council
  • Represent the council at committees and key meetings when required
  • Carry out other duties that support the work of the Director of Law and Governance and the Head of Legal - Commercial and Place
  • Report to the Principal Lawyer - Planning and Regeneration

The Ideal Candidate

  • Is a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives (or equivalent)
  • Has significant experience in property law and understands the legislation that underpins this work
  • Has strong knowledge of local government law and can act as the council’s lead expert in property matters
  • Can draft clear legal documents and handle cases involving medium to high levels of financial or reputational risk
  • Can explain complex legal issues in plain English
  • Is confident, organised and committed to providing a high-quality service

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
