Senior Transport Planner (Scheme Development)

Job Introduction

Milton Keynes Council is looking for a Senior Transport Planner to bring forward our ambitious local transport plans and shape our plans for the future. This is an exciting career opportunity based within our Transport Policy and Planning Team but working closely with other teams across the organisation. You will be developing and supporting implementation of transport schemes and projects, as well as supporting the development of our next generation of local transport plans and strategies. For the role we are seeking an enthusiastic individual with a passion for improving sustainable transport. Good partnership working, interpersonal and communication skills are essential, and you should have strong research and report writing skills. The ideal candidate will be degree educated with relevant post graduate qualifications and/or transport planning experience in the private or public sector.

Main Responsibility

  • Manage the identification, prioritisation and development of transport schemes to support the Council’s Mobility Strategy, including public transport schemes, walking and cycling schemes, highways schemes and technological initiatives.
  • Provide professional advice relating to transport policy, and lead on work to research, write and adopt new transport policies and strategies.
  • Proactively identify funding opportunities and manage the preparation of bids and business cases.
  • Work closely in partnership with businesses, developers, transport operators and other stakeholders on the development of plans and delivery of initiatives.
  • Report on the development of projects and programmes as necessary through agreed governance arrangements.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience of working in transport policy and planning roles.
  • Experience managing, supervising and coordinating outputs from internal staff and external consultants.
  • Degree or equivalent in a related subject.
  • Ability to write reports on complex strategic issues and present them to a range of audiences
  • Project Management, budget monitoring and research skills.
  • Methodical and well organised with the ability to produce quality work.
  • Ability to build strong partnerships with a range of partners and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient IT skills in the use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and potentially in GIS and data analytics.
