Senior Lawyer

Job Introduction

We have a great opportunity for a Senior Lawyer (Property & Housing) to join as a key member of our growing and collaborative in-house legal team. As Senior Lawyer, you will be one of the Council’s legal experts in one or more core areas of property legal work dealt with by Legal Services. You will take the lead on many of the Council’s high profile and complex commercial projects including regeneration projects and other development projects.

Ideally, you will have 5 years post qualification experience as a solicitor/barrister/legal executive. 

Main Responsibility

  • To manage a caseload of medium and high level matters ensuring that all work is both of a high quality and delivered in a timely manner. 
  • You will be accountable, with the Principal Lawyer, for the delivery of key performance targets for the team.
  • You will establish and maintain client relationships through understanding their business needs and objectives.
  • You will assist in encouraging junior team members to understand and achieve their clients objectives. 
  • You will assist in supervising the advice, advocacy and casework of more junior lawyers. 
  • You will ensure that the use of external advice and support is procured in accordance with agreed procedures and is focused on achieving best value. 

 

The Ideal Candidate

  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister (Supreme Court of England and Wales/English Bar) or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives or equivalent relevant qualification with relevant experience.
  • Significant experience of relevant legislation including relevant local government law.
  • A team player who is able to work collaboratively to achieve shared goals.
  • Ability to research complex areas of law and present them in clear and understandable terms to clients.
  • Ability to negotiate complex matters of high value, risk or importance, translating those matters into actions that best represents and protects the interests, desires and good governance of the Council.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate risks systematically, communicating information to enable appropriate and timely action; recognising situations where risk may be justifiable.
