Job Introduction
We’re seeking a Senior Health and Safety Advisor with experience across different sectors to set and improve health and safety standards across the city council.

You’ll enjoy building positive relationships with colleagues to become the first person they think of if they need support in getting health and safety right each and every day.
This role reports to the Head of Service for Housing Maintenance, Investment and Corporate Health and Safety. It sits in a friendly and agile team, and line manages one health and safety officer.
Main Responsibility
- Use in-depth understanding of MKCC’s structure and service areas to ensure that health and safety arrangements in place are appropriate to the risks that service areas are managing. This includes procurement and management of key contracts as well as colleague and service user safety.
- Set and lead the implementation of the strategy of health and safety management for MKCC’s schools (50+). This includes engagement with school colleagues and governors, training, building safety and others who work with schools. Such as the School Improvement Team and Property Team. The role holder will need to manage the Health and Safety Support Officer who will deliver as directed by this role holder.
- Lead and oversee MKCCs management of digital Health and Safety information. Including incident data, training, audits and other work and guidance. This includes budget responsibility
- Draw upon significant health and safety experience across sectors and risks to ensure MKCC’s risk management processes remain fit for purpose and improve risk control to keep colleagues, service users, customers, the public and contractors safe.
The Ideal Candidate
- NEBOSH diploma or equivalent NVQ in Health and Safety with wider qualifications/certificates for other specific risks such as manual handling, water safety, asbestos, etc.
- Significant experience in managing health and safety in a variety of sectors and workplaces – to include contractor risk as well as direct employee risk.
- Must be proactive, positive and able to engage as a clear communicator to motivate others to get health and safety risk control right.
- Ability to think strategically and prioritise fit for purpose risk control that meets or exceeds health and safety law. Presenting effective solutions and timely decision making is key.
- Experience managing people to ensure their workloads are prioritised and they are able to perform well.
- Demonstrable experience in tracking and trending work and information with an ability to present reports clearly and succinctly and work to deadlines.
