Job Introduction
The Environmental Crime Unit is the enforcement arm of our Environment and Waste Services Team.
We’re a small but busy team working in a high-pressure environment, investigating fly tipping, littering, abandoned vehicles and other crimes from report to prosecution, including taking witness statements, interviewing suspects, issuing fixed penalty notices and preparing case files for court.
We are also the city council's response to unauthorised encampments and carry out numerous evictions every year, following statutory guidelines.
As Senior Enforcement and Unauthorised Encampments Officer, you’ll pro-actively and re-actively tackle issues that impact on the quality of life of local residents. You’ll deal with victims, witnesses and suspects as well as partner agencies and other departments within the council.
We’re looking for a confident person who can deal with conflict, with a proven ability to investigate alleged offences and who can make sound decisions based on evidence. You’ll be able to demonstrate good communication skills and the ability to write accurate reports. An investigative background is essential for this role.
Interviews will be held on 18 or 19 December.
Main Responsibility
- Investigate fly tipping and other environmental crimes.
- Provide the city council's response to unauthorised encampments, including visiting and assessing sites.
- Carrying out welfare assessments and facilitating evictions were required.
- Produce and carry out plans to reduce fly tipping in specific areas.
The Ideal Candidate
- Broad knowledge of all relevant legislation and codes of practice for dealing with environmental offences, e.g. fly tipping, littering, etc.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to use IT Systems.
- Conflict management skills.
- Ability to plan workloads and meet deadlines.
- Ability to analyse, interpret and explain legislation.
- For this role, the candidate is required to have a full UK driving licence, along with access to a vehicle. Evidence of the driving licence and vehicle insurance with business insurance will be required from the candidate should they be offered this position. Without this documentation the candidate will not be appointable.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
