Job Introduction

Milton Keynes Council is looking for a dynamic, confident and enthusiastic individual to join its highly respected Electoral Services Team. With the imminent introduction of the Elections Bill in 2023, Electoral Services is a challenging and ever changing environment and we are looking for a candidate who is motivated, positive and has a healthy attitude to change.

It’s an exciting time to be joining our expanding electoral team. Fully parished and with a rapidly expanding electorate approaching 200,000, we also elect by-thirds, so this is a place to really test and develop your skills. 

As a Senior Electoral Services Officer, you will have extensive working knowledge of the legislative frameworks surrounding Elections and Electoral Registration and provide support to the Electoral Services Manager to plan, organise and deliver all elections and referendums in Milton Keynes.

The AEA Certificate is desirable, but not essential. 

Main Responsibility

  • To be responsible for the day-to-day administration and supervision of electoral registration, absent vote and voter identification activities, ensuring workloads are prioritised and processed in accordance with statutory requirements as directed by the Electoral Services Manager.
  • To support the Electoral Services Manager to ensure that the arrangements for the conduct of all elections, which fall to be organised by the Council, are efficient and lawful, leading on specific elements of the election process, as directed.
  • To co-ordinate staffing allocations for elections and the annual electoral canvass, including recruitment, allocation, training, performance management and payment of staff in accordance with operational and legislative requirements.

The Ideal Candidate

  • You will have a prominent level of accuracy and demonstrate initiative and resilience in order to work under pressure to meet statutory deadlines.
  • You will need to be flexible, proactive with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • You will need an elevated level of IT literacy, and ideally experience of using Xpress electoral management software.
  • You will be prepared to work towards achieving the AEA Certificate if you do not already have this qualification. 
  • You will have the ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as on your own. 
  • You will have a good understanding of information governance practices and handling sensitive personal information.
