Job Introduction
Milton Keynes is expanding and developing, and so is our Transport Team.
We want to ensure our transport networks are as safe as possible for everyone that uses them, and we’re seeking an enthusiastic and engaging Road Safety Officer to help us achieve this.
You’ll work with colleagues around the city council, and involve schools, resident groups and town, community and parish councils to deliver safety improvements and initiatives.
Your main responsibility will be reducing speeds and accident risk with a particular focus on vulnerable road users, such as children, older people and people with mobility challenges.
You’ll also help to organise city council road safety campaigns and events to promote road safety education, liaising with Thames Valley Police on joint safety programmes.
This is a rewarding role, with the responsibility for delivering positive outcomes for our residents by making our transport systems safer for everyone.
Alongside on-the-job training, we have successfully put team members through various road safety qualifications and training programmes where needed. In addition, training and career progression opportunities are available, and we will support the right candidate to progress their career within the Highways team.
This is a site-based role.

Main Responsibility
- Work in partnership with schools across the city to help address their safety issues at pupil arrival and departure times.
- Actively engage with schools on road safety education initiatives to improve the transport safety awareness of young people.
- Collaborate with other road user groups, such as motorcyclists or horse riders, on targeted safety initiatives.
- Working with town, community and parish councils and resident groups across Milton Keynes to identify road safety improvements to address known problems.
- Liaising with Thames Valley Police on joint road safety campaigns and initiatives, and tackling accident hotspots.
- Attend post-incident site visits with Thames Valley Police at recent crashes to help establish accident causation factors and remedial actions to reduce risk in the future.
- Provide advice to town, community, and parish councils on potential speed indicator device locations.
- Assist local schools who employ their own School Crossing Patroller (SCP) through the Council’s SCP grant system including training new SCPS, ordering uniform and providing ongoing support.
- Providing information to respond to road safety enquiries.
- Provide expert road safety input to the design of traffic management, safety and cycle schemes undertaken by others in the team.
The Ideal Candidate
- We’re looking for a dedicated individual to become our Road Safety Officer to help us improve the safety of our transport networks for all users.
- A good communicator, well-organised and a problem solver.
- Can work methodically with systems and to guidance.
- Is knowledgeable about road safety programmes and schemes.
- Enjoys engaging with our stakeholders and trying to address their concerns about road safety.
- Can get about from location to location across MK, ideally with a driving license, although we also have electric pool bikes for colleagues to use.
- Can work flexibly, with the occasional requirement for out of hours meetings.
- Should you be offered the role, as part of the pre-employment checks a Basic DBS will be actioned for you.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
