Revenues Inspector

Job Introduction

We’re recruiting a Revenues Inspector to join our Council Tax team within the Revenues and Benefits service at Milton Keynes City Council. The Council Tax team is responsible for administering Council Tax accounts, processing reliefs and exemptions, resolving customer enquiries, and applying legislation accurately and consistently.

As a Revenues Inspector, you’ll play a vital role in supporting this work by carrying out inspections and enquiries that help keep our records fair, accurate and up to date. The team’s work directly supports residents by helping them understand and manage their Council Tax, access reductions where they’re eligible, and resolve complex issues quickly and fairly.

You’ll help ensure legislation is applied consistently, while also supporting the council to maximise income collection that funds essential local services.

This role may be suitable for home working, following an assessment. Home‑based roles require a minimum of one day per week working from the office or site.

Main Responsibility

  • Carry out inspections and interview customers to establish liability for Council Tax and Business Rates.
  • Visit domestic and commercial properties to confirm eligibility for reliefs and exemptions.
  • Identify new domestic and commercial properties to support growth in the Council Tax base and Rating List.
  • Make enquiries with residents, businesses and internal colleagues to confirm account liability.
  • Update Council Tax and Business Rates systems to ensure records are accurate and complete.
  • Gather and prepare information required for Completion Notices.
  • Provide relevant information to the Valuation Office Agency when required.
  • Work flexibly to respond to service priorities and changing legislation.

The Ideal Candidate

  • GCSE English and Maths at grades A to C, or equivalent.
  • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle on a daily basis.
  • The ability to question information, solve practical problems and complete tasks accurately.
  • Confidence working independently while managing your own workload.
  • Experience of planning and prioritising work to meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, including clear written records and professional customer service.
  • The ability to negotiate, influence and build effective working relationships.
  • A professional and discreet approach when handling sensitive information.
  • A positive and flexible attitude in a busy working environment

Full UK Driving Licence and access to a vehicle

To be successful in this role, you’ll need a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. If we offer you the role, we’ll ask you to provide evidence of your driving licence and vehicle insurance, including cover for business use. We’re unable to confirm an appointment until these documents are received.

As part of the pre-employment checks, should you be offered the role, we’ll carry out a Basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
