Relief School Swimming Teacher

Job Introduction

Milton Keynes City Council Sports Development Team are seeking professional level 2 swimming instructors for the Milton Keynes Primary School Swimming Programme. The Programme delivers high quality lessons to pupils at key stage 1 and 2. With approximately 30 Primary Schools enrolled on the programme per school term, relief swimming instructors are required to provide cover and flexibility for existing staff and new schools.

As a relief instructor, regular teaching hours may be offered at the start of the term depending on the requirement of the programme. You’ll be required to work at short notice to provide cover for absences.

You’ll have one year’s practical experience of teaching, together with a Level 2 swimming teaching certificate, experience of working with young people is essential. You must also be competent in lesson planning, completing risk assessments, organisation skills, time management, and monitoring lessons.

Main Responsibility

  • Plan, prepare, deliver and monitor each swimming session in line with Key stage 1 and 2 of the National curriculum.
  • Ensure all sessions are appropriate to the pupils age and ability.
  • Responsibility of pupils’ health and safety whilst in the pool and on poolside (complying with all health and safety guidelines associated with teaching hazardous activities).
  • Enable the pupils attending the lessons to become water confident and water safe.
  • Increase the number of pupils who are capable of swimming 25m at the end of Key Stage 2.
  • Inspire and encourage young people to participate in pool swimming outside of the school environment.
  • Complete weekly paperwork, including risk assessments, registers, assessment sheets.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Level 2 Swimming Teachers Qualification
  • Safeguarding Child Protection Qualification
  • Teaching experience with children Key Stage 1 and 2
  • Knowledge of National Curriculum requirements for Swimming
