Public Health Practitioner -Mental Health and Well-Being

Job Introduction

A brilliant opportunity for a Public Health Practitioner to join a shared Public Health team to work on public mental health.

You’ll be based in Milton Keynes, but you’ll work across the three unitary authorities of Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes (BMK), reporting to the Public Health Principal for Mental Health and Wellbeing.

The Public Mental Health team works with partners to improve the mental health and wellbeing of residents across the three authorities. Current priorities include leading the Suicide Prevention Action Plan, real time suspected suicide surveillance data system and Prevention Concordat for Better Mental Health across Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes.

You will support the Public Health Principal by collaborating with partners across Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes integrated care system (BLMK ICS) in the development and delivery of public health initiatives that address mental health inequalities and improve mental health outcomes.

Experience of working in complex health and care systems and the ability to work strategically with partners is essential for this role. Experience in the mental health or suicide prevention field would be beneficial.

Main Responsibility

  • Develop, implement, and manage a range of specialist public mental health programmes and projects to improve mental health outcomes and reduce health inequalities.
  • Ensure programmes and projects are evidence based, value for money and delivered on time and within budget.
  • Monitor, analyse, present and communicate data on population health needs and inequalities relating to mental health to inform and influence local action plans and strategies.
  • Work collaboratively within own organisation and across agencies and boundaries with a wide range of partners including local authorities, health, police and the voluntary sector.
  • Contribute to key programmes of public mental health work including the real time suspected suicide surveillance (RTSSS) data system, suicide audit and suicide prevention.
  • Implement, monitor and report on action plans and strategies for lead areas of work.​

  • Driving licence is not essential but you will required to travel to various different locations from time to time.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week.  Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
