Job Introduction

Our Highways and Transport Service deliver essential services for the people of Milton Keynes including highways maintenance, managing local bus services, and developing millions of pounds of transport infrastructure every year, plus much more.

We have some really significant projects to work on in the coming years, such as:

  • Replacing street lighting to lower energy LEDs.
  • A large-scale electric vehicle programme.
  • Using AI and other technology to become even more efficient.
  • Major road and cycling network projects.

We’re often the first on the scene to deal with emergencies, so you’ll need to be prepared to be out and about in all weathers and possibly on call during the winter.

Main Responsibility

  • Implementation of multiple projects and programmes including the management of projects for highway construction.
  • Responsible for defining the overall project structure, planning and organisation, delivery of strategy and schedule of the project.
  • Develop, resource and implement an effective risk register.
  • Develop, resource and implement an effective change management and communications strategy plan.
  • Accountable for day-to day management of the project budgets, typically up to the value of £500k and for overseeing the project change control and day-to-day issue resolution.​

The Ideal Candidate

  • Knowledge and practical experience of project management techniques and approaches.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent or comparable attainment by experience with evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Proven ability to successfully plan complex work programmes, prioritise workloads and manage resources.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week.  Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
