Flood Resilience and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) officer

Job Introduction

Since it was first built in 1960s Milton Keynes has uniquely placed water management at the forefront of its design. A series of balancing lakes and linear parks throughout the city help control water and ensure its management sustainably. 

We're hiring a Flood Resilience and Sustainable Drainage (SuDS) Officer to play a vital role in ensuring flood risk is managed for the residents and businesses of Milton Keynes. 

You’ll do this by providing responses to planning applications undertaking project work as well as enforcement action where required. 

We particularly welcome applicants with planning background, GIS and data management skills, knowledge of undertaking section 19 flood investigations, skills in land drainage investigation and enforcement and community flood resilience and engagement skill. 

The role is based primarily at our city centre offices, but often travel will be required across the city. An in-depth training induction programme will be provided for the successful candidate. 

This role is may suitable for home working, following an assessment. Home-based roles require a minimum of one day in the office and site visits when required.

Main Responsibility

  • Ensure correspondence received by the Flood and Water Management team is dealt with in a timely and effective manner and all appropriate records are kept up to date.
  • Work with other officers to develop knowledge of surface water drainage matters and ultimately assist with the review of the planning applications and preparation of planning consultation responses.
  • Work with local communities to help them prepare for and respond to flooding, provide support to local flood groups.
  • Support with organising meetings, setting agendas, report on progress and support with meetings.
  • Communicate flood risk and drainage issues effectively with various customers, ensuring any enquiries are responded in a timely manner.
  • Assist in developing and implementing flood management schemes and identifying partnership funding, projects and studies, which aid the reduction of flood risk across Milton Keynes.
  • Following a flood, assist with coordinating flood investigation Section 19 reports of the Flood and Water Management Act (2010).
  • Undertake investigations and enforcement action as per the Land and Drainage Act 1991 and in accordance with adopted Flood and Water Management: Land Drainage Enforcement Policy.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Holds a degree and/or equivalent level of professional qualification in a relevant Subject e.g. food risk management, town planning, geography, civil engineering.
  • Someone who is flexible. You will work in different locations with Civic offices being the main base and undertaking site visits across Milton Keynes, travel outside of the city may be required. 
  • Ability to understand and interpret often complex, technical data and reports.
  • Ability to prioritise workloads, meet deadlines and be able to work well under pressure.
  • Enjoys talking to people and trying to put things right.
  • An understanding of the statutory functions of the Lead Local Flood Authority as defined in the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 and Land Drainage Act 1991.
  • Evidence of a driving licence with business insurance will be required from the candidate should they be offered this position. Without this documentation the candidate will not be appointable.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
