Coroner’s Officer

Job Introduction

We are looking for a full-time Coroners Officer to provide investigative support to the Coroners in Milton Keynes, so that they can deliver their statutory obligations with regard to reported deaths, according to the requirements of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009.

The post holder will be required to perform a wide range of duties related to the Coroners function. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with relevant knowledge and previous experience, either as a Coroners Officer or in another relevant field of work, e.g. nursing, para medicine, bereavement support or policing.

Main Responsibility

  • Post holders will be required to work without supervision and use a high level of initiative in decision making.
  • Assimilate information and reports of death.
  • Liaise with bereaved families ensuring they are fully informed at all stages of the coroners’ process.
  • Collate evidence and make relevant arrangements to ascertain identification and causes of death.
  • Prepare investigation files for the Coroner for inquests.
  • Out of hours on call duties will be expected on a rotational basis with team members.
  • DBS will be required as part of the role, along with a full driving licence.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Confident in dealing with a range of people including the bereaved, police officers and staff, medical personnel and other external agencies.
  • A good knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, common diseases and disorders, treatments and potential complications is preferable.
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to work flexibly and effectively when under pressure in a demand led service.
  • Must be able to produce work with meticulous attention to detail, clearly evidence excellent organisational and time management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks at short notice.
  • Must be competent in using Microsoft applications.
  • Candidates must be emotionally resilient. As well as dealing with reports of death as part of their daily duties there will be occasions when they will need to attend a scene of death or post mortem and be in the close proximity to the deceased.
  • Candidates must have confidence when dealing with external parties to direct processes on occasions in order to meet the legal requirements of the coronial system.
  • Diplomacy, tact and negotiating skills and ability to communicate at all levels of the organisation and with the general public.
  • Maintain high standards of personal presentation and hygiene during the performance of duties.
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the post or as directed by the line manager.
  • The position is likely to involve travel around the Milton Keynes area.
