Clerk of Works (Highways)

Job Introduction

Milton Keynes is a brand new City and is rapidly expanding with a huge amount of innovation at it’s core and we need a dynamic Clerk of Works to help us maintain the existing highways assets and infrastructure using traditional techniques and innovative solutions.

You will be working in one of the most innovative new cities in England as part of a small dedicated highways team, dealing with various aspects of Highway Maintenance; so no two weeks will be the same.

Alongside on the job training, we have successfully put some team members through BTEC HNC Civil Engineering qualifications, IHE Winter Service Qualifications and other courses. Training and career progression opportunities are available and we expect the right candidate to progress within the highways team.  

Working within a team of 10, you will deal with highway and structures projects but working for a unitary city you will get involved in all sorts of varied challenges.

Main Responsibility

  • You will assist in the management of multiple projects and programmes within timescale, budget and contract conditions, ensuring a high standard of quality assurance compliance for these Highway and Structures schemes and maintenance repairs.
  • You will nurture and maintain client contractor relationships and embrace partnership working whilst monitoring and recording contractor works and performance, ensuring construction is in accordance with specifications and contract drawings. 
  • Working with the senior engineers you will manage and report site technical problems, providing technical recommendations to the senior engineer and evaluate recommended options and value engineering solutions. 
  • Knowledge of local government legislative frameworks and financial regulations is necessary and you will be expected to prepare and present project information, project briefs and a range of technical and non-technical reports to a range of audiences.

The Ideal Candidate

  • You will have practical experience of supervision and monitoring of highway and structures construction works.
  • Knowledge of Highway contracts, specifications and cost models and price lists with NEC3 or NEC4 contract management and procurement experience.
  • Preferably educated to HND/HNC level in civil engineering or related discipline with demonstrable experience.
  • You are also likely to be a member of The Institute of Clerk Of Works and Construction Inspectorate and have experience of engaging with a range of stakeholders to discuss, develop and resolve issues.
  • You will have knowledge of highway construction methods and materials, knowledge of the Highways act 1980 and knowledge of highway maintenance operations and management.
