Job Introduction
Our small and friendly Business Rates team provides a professional service to our local businesses. We’re looking for a new full-time team member with strong customer service skills, a positive attitude, and willingness to learn a new role.
This role will primarily be working with our partner council Horsham District Council but on occasions you would be expected to provide resilience for our Business Rates & Recovery Teams at Milton Keynes City Council when required.
You’ll be involved in all aspects of the billing of Business Rates and the collection and recovery of Business Rates & Council Tax including maintaining computerised records, chasing unpaid debt and providing advice and support to customers through various channels in order to support with debt resolution.
Excellent communication skills, including good writing skills and the ability to record information clearly and accurately along with experience of delivering excellent customer service within a busy customer environment is essential. Although experience of the Capita One Revenues system is desired, full training can be provided to any applicants demonstrating strong transferable customer service skills.

Main Responsibility
- Monitor and collect outstanding Business Rates/Council Tax to ensure that recovery is maximised.
- Update the Business Rates/Council Tax system so that records are accurate and up to date.
- Deal with customers to conclusion [where possible] by telephone, email and post to answer queries relating to Business Rates/Council Tax.
- Understand and meet the needs of our customers and identify and signpost customers in need of debt management advice.
The Ideal Candidate
- Ideally you will have experience of working within a busy revenues service.
- Flexible and willing to adapt to change in a busy and demanding environment.
- Proven customer service experience.
- Proven experience of negotiations IT Literate in Microsoft Office Applications.
- Experience of using NEC Northgate and/or Capita Systems Proven aptitude for and experience of working with numbers/financial calculations, able to question and solve practical problems.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
