Job Introduction

We have an exciting new opportunity for an enthusiastic and energetic person to join our Bikeability Cycle Training Team. The team provide cycle training to over 2000 MK residents every year, teaching people how to learn to ride and how to cycle safely on our Redways and roads. This role would suit someone who is passionate about cycling and understands its many benefits, as well as being able to teach and inspire others to ride.


You will be responsible for delivering Bikeability cycle training to children, adults and families, mostly within schools during term time, but also in the school holidays, early evenings and occasional weekends. This is a relief worker contract. The amount of work Instructors are offered depends on the number of requests for cycle training. Some periods are busier than others. Whilst on a relief contract you do not need to commit to working every week, but you do need to be available for a complete individual course. (For 'Bikeability Level 2' courses it is generally 8 hours work per day over 3 – 4 days.) This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check.   

Main Responsibility

  • You will be responsible for delivering Bikeability cycle training to children, adults and families, mostly within schools during term time, but also in the school holidays, early evenings and occasional weekends.
  • You will also assist with campaigns and projects which aim to raise the profile of cycling amongst schools, businesses and local communities.
  • On occasions, you will be required to attend events to promote active travel, cycling and the Bikeability cycle training programme.
  • You will need to be able to travel around the borough of Milton Keynes to reach the training courses.
  • You will need to know your way around a bike so that you can check riders bikes for safety and carry out minor adjustments and repairs before training courses commence. (Bike maintenance training can be provided.)
  • This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.    

The Ideal Candidate

  • This role would suit someone who is passionate about cycling and understands it’s many benefits, as well as being able to teach and inspire others to ride. 
  • You will also need be experienced on a bike and enjoy working outdoors.
  • Ideally, a qualified Bikeability Instructor, although training could be provided for the right candidate.
  • You must be reliable and punctual.
  • You will possess the confidence to work independently and be able to develop lesson plans, as well as being a good team player, who is able to follow plans that have been developed by other instructors. 
  • It is essential that you have good communication skills and a positive personable attitude, along with experience working with people.
  • You will demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice relating to cycling and road safety; and you will comply with all policies and statutory regulations relating to health and safety, safe working practices, hygiene, cleanliness 
  • You will have good planning and organisational skills to maintain accurate records and be able to prioritise and handle a range of tasks at any one time.
  • No two days are the same when teaching so you will need to be able to be flexible and adaptable, with the ability to manage and lead training calmly, with a positive can-do attitude.  
  • You will have an understanding of risk assessments and control measures.
