Job Introduction
We’re recruiting an Assistant Permit Coordinator to join our Highways service at Milton Keynes City Council. Our Highways team manages all aspects of roadworks on our network to keep traffic moving and congestion to a minimum.
We coordinate works across the city, approve permits for utilities and our own contractors, and monitor and inspect activity on the highway. We also manage licences for activities on the highway, enforcement of obstructions, electric vehicle charger installations, and much more.
This role plays an important part in ensuring street works are well coordinated and delivered to the right standards for our residents and road users. You’ll support the Senior Permit Coordinator by helping to manage permits, fees, notices and compliance activity across the network.

Main Responsibility
- Support the coordination and processing of street works permits to help maintain a safe and efficient highway network.
- Monitor permit applications, statutory notices, fees and Fixed Penalty Notices in line with agreed procedures and controls.
- Administer Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs), including processing, coordination and invoicing.
- Arrange traffic signal switch‑offs and administer Section 58 and Section 81 notices, working closely with utilities and contractors.
- Maintain accurate records, notices and event logs, updating coordination systems and responding to enquiries and complaints.
- Assist with inspections, compliance activity and follow‑up actions to ensure quality standards are met across the network.
The Ideal Candidate
- Educated to NVQ Level 2 or able to demonstrate equivalent practical experience.
- Well organised, with the ability to produce clear letters, documents, reports and spreadsheets.
- Experience using Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn new systems quickly, including mapping or coordination tools.
- Knowledge of, or a willingness to learn, street works legislation and permit schemes.
- Able to communicate clearly and confidently with colleagues, contractors and members of the public.
- Able to plan work logically and manage competing priorities over time.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
