Assistant Engineer - Highways

The Highways and Transportation Team improve the city’s infrastructure, deliver multi-million-pound schemes and look after our existing network assets including 1,550km of highway, 600 bridges, 58,000 streetlights and of course, lots of roundabouts. We also have a unique cycling and walking redway network stretching more than 350km across the city.

Main Responsibility

  • Assist with the planning, implementation and reporting of multiple projects and programmes.
  • Ensure consistently high standards of quality control and supervision.
  • Preparation of various technical documents including works packages, quotation documentation, bills of quantities, specifications, design drawings, works orders for various Highway Projects, in accordance with local and national design standards.
  • Manage and implement all services in accordance with the Construction, Design and Management Regulations (CDM).
  • Maintain effective client/contractor relationships to meet the requirements and deadlines of the projects.
  • Liaise with elected members, parish councils, internal and external clients as well wider stakeholders.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Good communication skills with a wide range of audiences including senior city council colleagues to contractors.
  • HNC/HND in Civil engineering or equivalent or demonstrable relevant experience.
  • Good working knowledge of highways systems, processes, and procedures.
  • Willing to work towards professional qualifications that are relevant to the role.
  • Working knowledge of Highways Management & Asset System processes.
  • For this role you are required to have a full UK driving licence and provide evidence of your vehicle insurance with business cover and use of a vehicle. If you are successful, you will be required to supply evidence of your licence prior to starting the role.

Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week.  Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.
